Weight loss surgery and Type II diabetes

If you have Type II (late onset) diabetes as a result of obesity, there is good news. Research indicates that bariatric (weight loss) surgery can improve or even completely eliminate Type II diabetes. This important finding has implications for both your short- and long-term health. Though it takes more than a few days for high blood sugar to damage your organs, you may notice diabetes causing minor changes in your daily routine. For example, you may drink more water, which, in turn, may lead to more frequent urination. Fatigue and weakness may impair your ability to participate in everyday activities, and your vision may be affected. Over the course of time, diabetes can lead to other conditions including kidney and nerve damage; depression; foot and skin complications; heart disease; and stroke.

For all of these reasons, it is important to work with your physician to develop a plan to manage your diabetes. In some cases, your doctor may suggest weight loss surgery. Candidates for bariatric surgery usually have a Body Mass Index (BMI) over 40 or have a BMI of 35-39 and a weight-related medical condition, such as diabetes.
