How much does bariatric surgery cost?

The cost of bariatric surgery (that is, the cost of weight loss surgery) depends on many factors.  Some of the factors that influence bariatric surgery costs are discussed below.

  • Type of Procedure.  The Lap Band® cost may differ from the cost of gastric bypass. Your physician will determine which type of procedure is best for you.
  • Length of Hospital Stay.  The cost of gastric bypass surgery or other weight loss surgery cost will depend on how long your hospital stay will be. Depending on the procedure, hospital stays usually range from 3-7 days after surgery. Sometimes hospital stays can be lengthened by unexpected complications, which would increase the Lap Band® cost or the cost of gastric bypass.
  • Insurance Coverage. Your out-of-pocket expenses to cover gastric bypass cost or the cost of other procedures will depend on your insurance coverage.  Depending on the patient’s BMI and other factors, many insurance companies cover gastric bypass surgery costs as well as other weight loss surgery costs.
  • Facility and Surgeon. Depending on what facility you choose and who your doctor is, gastric bypass surgery cost or other procedures may be more or less expensive.
  • Special Needs. If you need special accommodations (e.g., complex anesthesia, special dietary needs, etc.), the gastric band cost or the gastric bypass costs may increase.

How much does gastric bypass surgery cost?

The cost of gastric bypass surgery can range from $20,000 to $50,000.  On average, gastric bypass surgery cost is usually about $25,000. The amount you pay out-of-pocket will depend on your insurance.

How much does the Lap Band® cost?

The Lap Band® price is, on average, $15,000 to $20,000. However, the stomach band cost can vary greatly based on the aforementioned factors.  The amount you pay out-of-pocket will depend on your insurance.
